My character, Miss Torso Essay
My character, Miss Torso is outgoing and full of life. She has a passion for dancing and it finds a way into every aspect of her life. She dances whilst making breakfast and entertains male guests as it is highly amusing. The enthusiasm I embody cannot be faked and is clearly seen in the opening scenes. Hitchcock, my director manipulates my character and her personality to be overtly sexualised and purely for the viewing of male counterparts. I resent the portrayal of my character having to rely on the affection of men to be happy. Yes, I enjoy the company and the entertainment they provide but I do not need it to survive or to find happiness. Not only are the women in the film presented as highly attractive and submissive to men, they are given the stereotype of women being needy and reliant on men. However if you look closely at the film you will see that if it werenââ¬â¢t for the women, the mystery of the murder would never have been uncovered. Crucial female characters found many clues, pieced together the events within the crime and risked their lives with absolutely no recognition. Lisa, who could have had a strong relationship with Miss Torso given the opportunity could have helped further the investigation. With the understanding that the genre relies heavily on these stereotypes to recognise crime fiction they should be re-evaluated as the times have changed. Women have fought relentlessly to attain rights and equality which should be represented within this film. I feel my character was merely a device for Hitchcock to exemplify his themes of voyeurism and women being the subject of the male gaze. As even her name is characterised after her body it highlights the stereotype that women are simply at appease the male counterparts. My part within the film is that of being a doppelganger to Lisa. I highlight the traits of an attractive female in this time period. These being that without a man you are lost and that your happiness depends solely on the comfort and reliance that a man provides. With this I find utterly absurd as both Lisa and I live by ourselves and manage our lives to our satisfaction. The affection I receive from males by entertaining are all for my pleasure. In the film however this is not how it is portrayed; rather than for my amusement and independence it is depicted as my reliance on men. I resent this portrayal as it is far from what I feel. This all returns back to the murder of Mrs Thorwald. The assumption is made that she was a whinging wife that was bedridden and could not perform the daily duties that are expected thus leading to her murder. The whole concept of marriage is burdened with negative connotations throughout the film. Even the newlywed couple who are blissfully on their honeymoon depict this when at the end of the film the husband is seen looking out the window with distain towards his wife. It is almost seen as acceptable that the wife is murdered as not even the professional detective will take the case seriously. My character portrays a woman reliant of men with her quality of life being completely due to male involvement. This is a huge misinterpretation of the strong, independent and charismatic woman that she actually is. These traits need to be highlighted rather than subverted as a means of accentuating the theme of females being subject to the male gaze.

Project Scope Management Essay
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 1. What is involved in project scope management, and why is good project scope management so important on information technology projects? Scope refers to all the work involved in creating the products of the project and the processed used to create them. Project scope management includes scope planning, scope definition, WBS creation, scope verification, and scope control. Itââ¬â¢ important to Information Technology because it is good for preventing scope-related problems on information technology projects. 2.What is involved in collecting requirements for a project? Why is it often such a difficult thing to do? There are many ways to collect necessities for a project, such as interviewing stakeholders, holding focus groups, using questionnaires and surveys, observation, and prototyping. It can be difficult to collect requirements because of different stakeholders often have different needs, they can change quickly, and many are difficult to implement with the present systems. 3.Discuss the process of defining project scope in more detail as a project progresses, going from information in a project charter to a project scope statement, WBS, and WBS dictionary. The project charter is the document that officially authorizes a project. The project charter provides the project manager with the authority to apply organizational resources to project activities. A project manager is identified and assigned as early in the project as is achievable. The project manager should be assigned prior to the start of planning first while the project charter is being developed. Projects are usually chartered and authorized external to the project organization. The project scope statement is the formal definition of the project and what needs to be accomplished. This process addresses and documents the characteristics and boundaries of the project and its associated products and services, as well as the methods of acceptance and scope control. The project scope statement is developed from informationà provided by the initiator or sponsor. The Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) organizes and defines the total scope of the project. It is a deliverable-oriented categorized breakdown of the work to be executed by the project team to accomplish the project objectives and create the deliverables. The WBS subdivides the project work into smaller, more controllable pieces. The work contained in the lowest-level WBS components which are called work packages, can be scheduled, cost estimated, monitored, and controlled. 4.Describe different ways to develop a WBS and why it is often so difficult to do. You can develop a WBS by using guidelines, the analogy approach, the top-down approach, the bottom-up approach, and the mind-mapping approach. It is difficult to create a good WBS because each WBS is unique based on the project and the team. 1. Types of WBS: Construct a WBS base on the following task list from MS Project. Another type of WBS 5.What is the main technique used for validating scope? Give an example of scope validation on a project. 6.Using examples in this book or online, describe a project that suffered from scope creep. Could it have been avoided? How? Can scope creep be a good thing? When? What can organizations do to successfully manage inevitable changes in scope that are good for business? IT projects within the UK health care industry suffer the most from Scope Creep; which they rarely meet the needs of users and stakeholders. This is why they are almost always significantly over budget in a project. It could be avoided by never forget what your project scope is. Everyone will try to get you to make seemingly small scope changes; which you should not do and get a Project Scope Statement that is approved by all Project Stakeholders during the project initiation. It can be a good thing, if you realize a better way toà scope the project or make a better product than your competitor and the client finds out that the company has capabilities; which the client was not initially aware of and the client learns new details about a competing product. With this knowledge, the client presses for changes to the project, often at little or no additional cost. The project manager effectively manages change by maintaining the appropriate balance between control and discipline to manage to the baseline plan, and flexibility to adapt the plans to meet customer expectations. In addition to, using project metrics to monitor and identify creep. 7.Why do you need a good WBS to use project management software? WBS helps to more accurately and precisely define and organize the scope of the total project. What other types of software can you use to assist in project scope management? Microsoft Project ââ¬â is a large, powerful, and widely used package that offers a ton of planning functionality. Omni Plan ââ¬â is a similar to Microsoft Project, but smaller project-planning package for Macs. Dream Team ââ¬â offers project-planning tools combined with more collaborative task- and document-management functionalities. Gantt Chart ââ¬â a type of bar chart that illustrates a project schedule. Gantt charts illustrate the start and finish dates of the terminal elements and summary elements of a project. Terminal elements and summary elements comprise the work breakdown structure of the project.

Bacterial Growth Requirements
Bacteria Growth Requirements Microbiology Life as we now it has ended. What is left you ask? Well it is said the only thing that could survive an incident that could end our known way of life is a roach and a pack or Twinkies. In truth the great survivor would be microorganisms. Microorganisms can survive where most cannot due to their size, nutritional needs, energy requirements, and are very good at adapting to different environments (Black 2008).Microorganisms require two things to live a long healthy life, and these are physical and nutritional factors. Physical factors include pH, temperature, oxygen concentration, moisture, hydrostatic pressure, osmotic pressure, and radiation (Black 2008). Nutritional factors include carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorus, trace elements, and sometimes vitamins (Black 2008). For the purpose of this exercise I will focus on E. coli. Pathogenic Escherichia coli will be discussed since it is a common, but dangerous bacterium.E. coli in humans is fo und in the intestines. This bacterium is very durable, meaning that it is well-adapted to its habitat. For example, it can grow with glucose being the only food source. This bacterium can also grow with or without O2. If located in anaerobic habitat it can it will use the fermentation process producing mixed acids and gases (Todar 2012). This bacterium has shown that it can also use anaerobic respiration when NO3 or NO2 is available.Chemicals, pH, temperature, are a few signals that determines how E. coli will respond (Todar 2012). When it senses a change in the environment it can swim toward or away from anything useful or harmful. Temperature can also affect E. coli. A change in temperature allows E. coli to change pore diameter of its outer membrane to accommodate certain nutrients, or to exclude something harmful. E. coli also rations its nutrient supply by taking in account how much is available in its environment. This means that it will not take in nutrients unless it has enou gh to feed more bacteria that will be produced (Todar 2012). As you can see, this amazing microbe has the ability to adapt to its environment and in some case overcome. Imagine the microbes that are out there that has not be identified yet. Reference Black, J. (2008). Microbiology principals and explorations. (7th Edition ed. ). Jefferson City: GGS Book Services. Todar, K. (2012). Todars online textbook of bacteriology. Retrieved from http://www. textbookofbacteriology. net/e. coli. html Bacterial Growth Requirements Bacterial Growth Requirements Evelyn Lyle ITT Technical Institute Angela Ask, MPS January 15, 2012 Every organism must find in its environment all of the substances required for energy generation and cellular biosynthesis. The chemicals and elements of this environment that are utilized for bacterial growth are referred to as nutrients. Many bacteria can be identified in the environment by inspection or using genetic techniques. The nutritional requirements of a bacterium such as E Coli are revealed by the cellââ¬â¢s elemental composition. These elements are found in the form of water, inorganic ions, small molecules and macromolecules which serve either a structural or functional role in the cells. Bacteria thrive by four things oxygen, food (nutrients), warmth and time but two others can be moisture and acidity. Nutrients are needed for energy, nitrogen (for DNA and proteins), phosphorus (for energy), and others. Warmth is needed so the bacteria can stay warm. Oxygen is needed so the bacteria can make energy and time is needed for the bacteria to complete binary fission over and over again. Acidity is needed so the bacteria can survive in its environment.Highly base or acidic environments may harm the bacteria and hinder its lifespan. In order to survive and grow, microorganisms require a source of energy and nourishment. Bacteria are the most primitive forms of microorganisms but are composed of a great variety of simple and complex molecules and are able to carry out a wide range of chemical transformations. Depending on their requirements and the source of energy used they are classified into different nutritional groups. Most microorganisms grow well at the normal temperatures favored by man, higher plants and animals.Certain bacteria grow at temperatures (extreme heat or cold) at which few higher organisms can survive. Most bacteria grow best in an environment with a narrow pH range near neutrality between pH 6. 5 and 7. 5. Microbes contain approximate ly 80-90% water and I f placed in a solution with a higher solute concentration will lose water which causes shrinkage of the cell. Some bacteria have adapted so well to high salt concentrations that they actually require them for growth. Nitrogen and phosphorus are particularly critical because they often control the rates of photosynthesis.Carbon is significantly more abundant than either of them and oxygen and sulfur are more abundant that phosphorous. Nitrogen and phosphorous are less available to plants relative to their growth requirements than are other elements. Phosphorus is often in short supply and limits plant and algae growth. Nitrogen is a major constituent of all proteins and of all living organisms. A lack of nitrogen can limit growth of plants, since nearly three quarters of its atmosphere consists of natural gas, N2. Analysis of The War Prayer Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Analysis of The War Prayer - Essay Example He exerted all his effort to assert how the real idea of patriotism might be distorted, and at the end, result to more humanly damaging actions like war. He started his assertions, by first visualizing a scene, when people are at the stage of preparation in going to war. He described how the called spirit of heroism flew unto the air; people gathered, fully motivated and convinced that what they are going to do is a thing of great nationalistic worth. He described a festive day, wherein every people in the land are strong in their heart, that such action to wage war is something that will give honor to their country, with reminiscence of those patriots that once risk their life for nationââ¬â¢s sake. Such statement will surely create an appeal to everyone who thinks of the national heroes patriotic deeds. It creates persuasion to everybody, such that hastily, arrived to the decision that there is nothing wrong about war. As what he described, ââ¬Å"...nightly the packed mass meetings listened, panting, to patriot oratory which stirred the deepest deeps of their hearts, and which they interrupted at briefest intervals with cyclones of applause...,â⬠He attempts to show, how one person might be convince to join and support the pro-war idea. A mass campaign is done, and speakers tend to emotionally stir the hearts of people to make justifications. This justification is even made stronger once religious authorities showed and extended their support to that claimed nationalistic idea. Twain added; ââ¬Å"...in the churches the pastors preached devotion to flag and country, and invoked the God of Battles beseeching His aid in our good cause in outpourings of fervid eloquence which moved every listener.â⬠All these things created impact to the society to be in coordination that war is of good cause. Those who withdraw pro-war support tend to keep quiet so that they will not be criticized by the majority that seemed to celebrate a festive day preparatory to what they

Describe the major differences existing between private wrongs and Essay
Describe the major differences existing between private wrongs and public crimes as they affect the business community - Essay Example The major difference between private wrong and public wrong is that private wrong is an infringement of civil rights of individuals, regarded solely as individuals (ibid). The torts and contracts are concerned with private wrongs. As part of civil law, torts primarily deal with individuals or complainants who are victimized or wronged. In private wrongs, individuals incur some sort of loss due to the faults of others which needs to be compensated. Trespassing is one of the most common private wrong. The complainants are invariably individuals but the defendants could be individuals, group or even the state, which have, directly or indirectly, been responsible for inflicting injury on the innocent party (Fletcher, 1996). Another important feature is that here the victim or plaintiff is principally in charge of the legal process. A civil process or legal action puts the victim in charge who initiates proceedings against the person or people who have allegedly wronged him/her. There is no compulsion on the plaintiff to either pursue the case or to drop it. Public wrong or crime, on the other hand, is exemplified as crime which necessitates criminal proceedings where state is mainly in charge of legal process. The police and other state authorities are involved in the process to investigate the veracity of the crime. The state is responsible for the status of the criminal proceedings and main decision maker for deciding whether it should continue or not. The public wrongs have wide ramifications on the public and are not merely confined to individuals (Miller, 2011). Corporate scams like Enron and WorldCom are prime examples of public wrongs that have significantly impacted the public at large. Rape is another critical public wrong that requires criminal proceedings against the culprit and the punishment serves as deterrent for other offenders. The response or outcome of the

Apple Case Analysis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Apple Case Analysis - Essay Example There was no surprise to see people standing in long queues eagerly anticipating the launch of ipad3, almost everyone wanted to get their hands on the newest gadget launched by Apple again underlining their dominance and global reach. Apple is arguably the best brand in the world because they have spent a lot of money on innovation and they have achieved their objectives in the recent past of making their gadgets better than other similar gadgets available in the market. Steve Jobs always wanted to make a computer which was easy to use and he managed to do it, Apple II was launched in the year 1978. It was an easy to use computer, it is said that the launch of Apple II completely revolutionized the computing industry. Apple also became a leader after the launch of Apple II in 1978. Competitive Position Appleââ¬â¢s dominance was challenged by IBM, IBM entered the fray in the year 1981, Apple found their newest rivals in IBM. There was a major difference between the systems produced by the two companies, Appleââ¬â¢s computer was a prototype and could not be cloned on the contrary IBMââ¬â¢s system could be cloned by others very easily. IBM heavily relied on Intel to supply processors but that was not the case with Apple. IBMââ¬â¢s entry into the market did not affect Appleââ¬â¢s revenue but IBM took away the market share from Apple to a certain extent and Apple had their eyes set on winning the market share once again and restoring normalcy. A significant changed occurred in the year 1984; a very young Steve Jobs presented Macintosh to the whole world in an endeavor to win back their lost market share. The technical elegance and the design of the new Macintosh, was captivating beyond imagination but when it came to performance the Macintosh disappointed its users. It was really slow and because of these lags it did not sell as expected by the honchos at Apple. Between 1983 and 1984 Apple had a torrid time, net income of the company fell by 17% and s uddenly the company was in crisis. Steve Jobs was removed from his post after these series of setbacks, John Sculley was at the helm back them. He was the same man who reinvigorated Pepsi and fought successfully against Coca Cola to gain dominance. Sculley worked on graphics and designs and knew that these were the two key elements that could take Apple to where it originally belongs. Desktop publishing was another key area which Sculley targeted and Apple all of a sudden started producing systems which were best when it came to desktop publishing. Major Competitive Advantages As discussed earlier Appleââ¬â¢s design and elegance were two factors which gave it an edge over other companies but these two factors were anything but enough to propel the company to the very top. Several other competitive changes were made by Sculley during his time at the helm, his tie-up with Aldus which is now known as Adobe was a great move for Apple and it restored much needed stability in the compa ny, products designed by Aldus were used for desktop publishing and the same made Apple one of the best in the world once again post the Steve Jobs era. The Macintosh started selling like hotcakes once the products made by Aldus were used in the Macintosh, Apple recorded record sales of the Macintosh and that was when Apple regained its prominence. Accessories like laser printers were also sold by Apple and the same had unmatched capabilities and this is why

'Prior to 1850, inter-ethnic relations among Asian populations were Essay
'Prior to 1850, inter-ethnic relations among Asian populations were marked by cultural stereotypes and occasional hostility, b - Essay Example Firstly, one can consider the roles that economics and business played in the context of colonialism. At the root of this, there existed the profound desire to profit and benefit from the riches that could be extracted from around the globe. Within such an understanding, one can see that colonialism was fundamentally a means by which the colonial powers sought to better themselves, the nation, and their respect and prestige. One might argue that racism is therefore not the motive by which colonialism was able to spread its influence. However, must consider the fact of what specific mindset stimulated colonialism in the first place. Ultimately, there was the idea that other nonââ¬âwhite populations were of little to no value and therefore could be exploited without any moral dilemmas. Thus, slavery, genocide, rape, and the deprivation of wealth and culture could be precipitated by the colonial power with little concern regarding how the actions might affect the indigenous populati ons. In such a way, the understanding that colonialism was ultimately and primarily an economic system that shows aspects of racism, begins to unravel (Chambers). Due to the fact that such a system cannot and would not have existed had there not been a profound level of racial superiority in the first place, it is the understanding of this author that the economic explanation and definition of colonialism is ultimately only part of the explanation. Secondly, for those that might be tempted to view Hirschmanââ¬â¢s argument that colonialism was solely defined by race, it can and should be considered that the racial understanding, with regards to how Europeans integrated with the subjugated populations, differed widely based upon who the colonial ruler was and what geographic/ethnic communities they might be integrating with at the given time. Although it may be convenient to assume that colonial rule was undifferentiated, racist, xenophobic, and uniform throughout the entire world, the fact of the matter is that there was a varying degree of severity, cruelty, and respect- or disrespect, existed depending on the context. For instance, when one compares the means by which the British colonial powers integrated with and dealt with their Indian colonies, this cannot be compared with the way that they dealt with some of their African holdings. The same can of course be said with regards to the means by which the British managed and integrated with their Caribbean holdings as well as their Asian and Southeast Asian holdings. Within these areas, it was common for the British to enslave and impress the natives and various levels of servitude, such actions were not necessarily common within other colonial holdings. Evidence of this is of course seen across the board with relation to how the British interacted with every single one of their colonial possessions within Asia. Whereas colonial treatment was nominally better in sectors of mainland China and certain parts of India, the enslavement and use of the population as coolies in the majority of Asian colonies was uniform and a pervasive tactic of British and other European powers colonial method of operation (Bradley, 2004). Evidence of this can of course be seen with relation to

Hotel management questions(answer each questions with few sentences) - Essay Example Also, cashiers are in charge of making transactions between different currencies. Some precautionary steps that employees can take include checking that the card has been signed, when the expiration date occurs, and ask for some form of identification if it is felt to be necessary. Additionally, employees can make sure that documents containing information about a payment card number only include part of it for security reasons. The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) is designed to combat computer breaches, payment card fraud, and also report identity theft. This is critically important because it adds an extra layer of security for cardholders. It applies to all merchants who accept debit or credit cards as a form of payment. There are severe penalties for merchants who choose not to comply. A second-party check is made out to the guest presenting the check, while a third-party check is made out to someone who then signs the check over to the guest for presentation. The reason why many properties choose not to accept these types of checks is that if the writer of the check stops payment then it can be difficult to recover any funds. When accepting personal checks, a property should take into account whether the check is for the room and taxes only, food and beverage purchases, and will a check need to be verified after each subsequent transaction. Also, the property must decide whether or not checks from foreign bank accounts are acceptable, and will other types of checks, such as money orders, be okay. If necessary, a property should inform a guest that their credit will be denied, although it should be done in a nice manner so as to respect the guest. Ideally, the guest should be taken aside and informed of their credit problems. All efforts should be made to cater for the guest, including allowing them to investigate the problem on their own. Incomplete or illegible guest registration records can pose a problem because it

Customer Retention and Loyalty - Essay Example There are the few major factors that can give a slight glimpse on the behavior of customers in relation to the services.ââ¬Å"Imitation strategies beyond a certain point can have harmful consequences for both firms and consumers. Two occasions for potential harm to firms occur when a consumer unknowingly purchases an imitator brand. First, the consumer may be dissatisfied with the product purchased and attribute his or her dissatisfaction to the original brand, never realizing that the brand consumed was an imitator. Second, the consumer may be satisfied with the imitator brand, become aware that it is not the original brand, and switch brand preferences in favor of the imitator brandâ⬠(Berger, Foxman, Muehling 170, Vol 24: 1990).This all is clearly showing what possible outcomes may take place. It is seriously distracting to the goals of the service provider where as the customers can also be in loss as it is quite fair to say that each and every financial service provider cha rges a lot for the service, however if the company is having some good reputation than due to a variety of customers, they take good care of services and also charge relatively lesser than many of the other service providers in the industry. Another problem is the repurchase of any particular service, such as people often change their leasing service providers after they pay the entire due, rather than buying the next product through the similar service providers they start looking for new and even better ones.... Another problem is the repurchase of any particular service, such as people often change their leasing service providers after they pay the entire due, rather than buying the next product through the similar service providers they start looking for new and even better ones, which at times they get successful in, as the newly entered firms have some courage to serve the clients and they keep their promise in the beginning of their existence, however they mostly get distracted later on, and in this wa y people make repurchases from the new service providers at least for a while. So these all factors are influencing consumer behavior. "The majority of consumer purchases are potential repeat purchases. With the exception of one-time purchases, consumers buy similar products repeatedly or make repeated purchases from similar sellers. Thus, the majority of purchases represent one in a series rather than an isolated event. Understanding of any current purchase must be based on an understanding of the influence of prior purchases on later purchases. Major questions are how often and under what circumstances consumers make another purchase of a product they have tried or purchase from a

Project Management - Assignment Example Also I learned these questions will direct me towards the correct projects. During that training, I learned that planning enables managers to have predetermined criteria on how they can execute duties, and have well informed decisions. The training involved 5PM techniques which included; Initiation, planning, executing, Monitoring, and controlling. This techniques enables to define who authorizes the project, enable me to describe the management of the project, be able to help the group members to work together to complete a project, and how to check the progression of the project and rectify the problems. Being a Project Manager, I have been assigned a task of upgrading system software in an organization. The organization has an old system that needs to be upgraded so as to be efficient, and save time. Such undertakings are subject to many challenges if proper planning and execution is not done well. So utmost care must be taken. Some of the risks that such projects suffer include; on-time and on budget completion, security compromise, software compatibility issues and lack or no training to the users of the organization (Barbier, 2003). The software upgrade done should be able to have a specific timeline i.e. a life cycle that has a start of use and when the program should be replaced because it has become obsolete with time. There is also the aspect of the scope of work the software can and not do. This has to be defined from the beginning The compelling purpose of this project is to enhance efficiency, increase functionality, and thus productivity of the organization by use of Software. The organization has been suffering from incompetency because of lack better software to help the firm to run its auditing work. Thus it has led to the company to rely on paper work which is slow, bulky, and untidy. Digitizing a system cannot be underestimated. Because operation costs and

Water Pollution Essay Example for Free
Water Pollution Essay Water is a necessity to life on earth. All organisms contain it, some drink it, and others inhabit it. Plants and animals require water that is moderately pure, and they cannot survive if their water is affluent with toxic chemicals and/or harmful microorganisms. If severe, water pollution can kill large numbers of fish, birds, and other animals, in some cases killing all members of a species in an affected area. Water pollution is not only hazardous to water-bond animals it also poses as threat to humans as well. The majority of water pollution occurs when people overload the water environment with wastes. Its defined as contamination of streams, lakes, underground water, bays or oceans by substances harmful to living things. Such things as oil spills, boat fumes, and dumping of trash into the oceans, lakes, and rivers are just a few of the major contributors to water pollution. Throughout the past century water pollution has become a very real problem and solution must be found. First of all, Water pollution presents problems to humans in a few ways. Water pollution makes streams, lakes, and coastal waters unpleasant to look at, to smell, and to swim in, as well as preventing us from drinking it without filtration. Fish and shellfish harvested from polluted waters may be unsafe to eat. People who ingest polluted water can become ill and if theyre exposed for a long time, may develop cancers, or have children with birth defects. There are two types of water pollution; point source and non-point source. Point sources of pollution occur when harmful substances are put directly into a body of water (such as an oil spill). A non-point source is when pollutants enter the water indirectly through environmental changes (like when fertilizer is carried into a stream by rain). The major water pollutants are chemical, biological, and physical materials that lessen the water quality. These pollutants can be separated into seven different classes: Petroleum products, pesticides and herbicides, heavy metals, hazardous materials, excess organic matter, sediment, and finally thermal pollution. The first category is petroleum products. Petroleum products include oil and chemicals from oil are used for fuel, lubrication, plastics manufacturing, and many other purposes. The petroleum products get into water by accidental spills from ships, tanker trucks, and leaky underground storage tanks. Many petroleum products are poisonous if ingested by animals and spilled oil damages the feathers of birds and the fur of animals, often causing numerous deaths among these birds, furred animals, as well as fish. The second category that pollutants can be classified as is pesticides and herbicides. These include chemicals used to kill unwanted animals and plants. An example of this may be something used to keep certain bugs off of fruits or vegetables. These pollutants may be carried into streams by rainwater. If the chemicals in these herbicides and pesticides are not biodegradable they can remain dangerous for a long period of time. When an animal eats a plant that has been treated with certain non-biodegradable chemicals, the chemicals are absorbed into their tissues or the organs. When other animals feed on a contaminated animal, the chemicals are passed up to them. As it goes up through the food chain, the chemical becomes more harmful, so animals at the top of the food chains may suffer cancers, reproductive problems, and death. This can be a very serious problem for many species of animals. The herbicides and pesticides found in some polluted waters dont simple pose a problem to animals; they can also be harmful to humans. More than 14 million Americans drink water contaminated by pesticides, and the EPA estimates that ten percent of wells contain pesticides. These Nitrates can cause a lethal form of anemia called blue baby syndrome in infants. Also there are many other humans that have allergies to these chemicals, and can cause health problems if enough of the contaminated water is digested. Other chemicals that are a problem in the pollution of water are heavyà metals. Heavy metals, such as copper, lead, mercury, and selenium, get into the water from industries, automobile exhaust, mines, and natural soil. Heavy metals also become more harmful as they follow the food chain. When they reach high levels in the body, they can be immediately poisonous, or can result in long-term health problems. They can sometimes cause diarrhea and, over time, liver and kidney damage. Children exposed to lead in water can suffer mental retardation. Fish that have been exposed to mercury can be extremely poisonous to humans if they eat the fish. The fourth classification that is known to pollute waters is hazardous materials. Included in this class are chemical wastes that are toxic, reactive, corrosive, or ignitable. If not treated or stored properly, they can pollute water supplies. Such as in other categories once the hazardous wastes reach one part of the food chain they can be passed on to the animals that depend on them for food. The fifth leading cause of water pollution is excess organic matter. Some examples of excess organic matter are fertilizers and other nutrients used to promote plant growth on farms and in gardens that may fine their way into water. At first the nutrients will help the plants and algae in the water grow, but when they die and settle underwater, microorganisms decompose them, while decomposing them the microorganisms take in oxygen that is dissolved in the water. The oxygen levels in the water may drop so low that fish and other oxygen-dependent animals in the water suffocate, and die, this happens mostly in the Midwest and other such places where there are vast amounts of farm land. Yet another principal cause of the pollution of water is sediment. Sediment is soil particles carried to a stream bed, lake, or ocean, if in large amounts, can also be a pollutant. Soil erosion can damage a stream or lake by adding too much nutrient matter. Sedimentation can also cover stream bed gravel where many fish lay their eggs. Therefore, this can greatly decrease the population of fish in future generations. This is one of the many reasons that soil erosion is trying to be prevented today. The final cause of water pollution, which is often overlooked, is known as Thermal water pollution. Thermal pollution takes place when water is taken from rivers, lakes, or the ocean to be used in factories and power plants. This water is usually returned to the source much warmer than when it was taken. Even a small temperature change in a body of water can drive away the fish and other species that were usually inhabited that particular region, and in conjunction attract other species in place of them. This develops unwanted ecosystems in areas where they should not be. Thermal pollution can speed up the biological processes in plants and animals and/or lower the oxygen level in the water. Fish and other wildlife near the discharge source, may die. So as you can see, water pollution is a very serious problem it is responsible for dramatic decreases of fish and wildlife populations in our, rivers, lakes, and oceans. Water pollutants should also be held accountable for many cases of food poisoning, especially experience in seafood. In order to solve this problem we need to learn about ways for disposing harmful household wastes so they dont end up in sewage treatment plants or landfills. In our yards, we should determine whether or not we need to add nutrients before fertilizers are applied, and look for alternatives where fertilizers may run off into surface waters. We need to preserve existing trees and plant new trees and shrubs to help prevent soil erosion. Around the house we should we need to keep litter, pet waste, leaves, and grass clippings out of gutters and storm drains, and buy as many heavily packaged foods, certain boxes, cartons, bottles, etc that are made with polluting dyes. On a more widespread note, we must be much more careful about the types of pesticides we use, how we transport oil and other harmful materials, and work as hard as we can to prevent soil erosion and excess organic matter. If everyone works together to prevent water pollution this problem can be decreased drastically, if not eliminated. We all depend on water as a part of everyday life, we simply need to make sure that we as humans dont take this for granted, and take every step possible to keep the waters on this Earth as clean as possible. Nurses Notes Essay Example for Free
Nurses Notes Essay Writing stays with you throughout your entire life, though you may not believe so. Hidden in your thoughts about your future career is the idea that writing will be part of your profession. After doing extensive research, I now realize how much writing will be involved with my chosen profession, a registered nurse. Writing in nursing can range from short, concise works to long, detailed, complex works. Writing as a nurse contains nurseââ¬â¢s notes, documentation, written reports, health records, flowcharts, care-plans, narratives, and if desired, professional journals for publication. The position within in the field also plays a role with the amount of writing needed to be done. The head of a department takes part in a lot more writing than a nurse. A head of a department holds a variety of duties when it comes to writing such as: staff proposals, budget proposals, department operations, policies and procedures, and protocols. A nurse must be able to follow the basic writing standards: writing clear, concise, and grammatically correct sentences, use proper punctuation, and demonstrate critical thought. Nurses are also expected to learn how to present information succinctly with their work being accessible to anyone who may read it. Nurses aim to write work that can be used in both clinical aspects of discipline and research. The field of nursing requires a nurse to be able to write swiftly and accurately. Nurses must also always be prepared to define their recorded information and writing. Records must be clear, concise, complete and accurate. The clichà © that is universally known, the job is not complete until the paperwork is completed is more true in health care than in any other profession, referring to the fact that a lot of writing is done in this workforce. Types of Writing: Nursing as a profession contains many different types of writing. Nurseââ¬â¢s notes are records that nurses who directly care for the patient, continuously record information. This includes the patientââ¬â¢s symptoms, medications given, and scheduled procedures or activities. Documentation reflects the care the care the nurse has or has not provided to the patient. Documentation is the nurseââ¬â¢s only form of legal proof that they did or did not do something for the patient. Nurseââ¬â¢s look at documentation as important as the actual care they are providing for their patient. Hands-on care and documentation carries equal importance in the eyes of a registered nurse. Documentation then becomes art of the patientââ¬â¢s medical record after the patient is either discharged or no longer living. Written reports are needed when the care of a patient is given over to another nurse. I interviewed Sharon Doll, a registered nurse at Glendive Medical Center who states that these written reports are very rare. ââ¬Å"It is highly unlikely that you as a registered nurse will have to give the care of your patient over to another nurse.â⬠(Personal interview, November 23, 2012) Health records, or medical records, consist of the accumulation of nurseââ¬â¢s notes. The records are held on file at the hospital and are referred to when needed. Health records consist of prescriptions prescribed to the patient, x-ray results, test results, reports, blood type, allergies and other important information about the patient that the care providers may need to be aware of. Recently, health records have transferred to being electronic, taking away from the writing perspective. Assessment check-boxes go hand-in-hand with health records as well, which are the summary of the symptoms of the patient. Flowcharts simply show the process that has been taken while caring for patients. They show the sequence in which the patient has followed. This is a concise review of the patientââ¬â¢s history and the care that was provided. Care-plans outline the nursing care that is to be provided to the patient. It is a set of actions that the nurse will take to provide the necessary care for the patient in hopes of full recovery. A care-plan consists of three parts: definition of the problem, intervention and/or solutions, and the evaluation of success or intervention and/or solution. Many times, care-plans are set out by the doctor because the doctor is not as available as the nurse. Care-plans are usually completed day-by-day and sort of run on a schedule. Narratives are important in nursing communication and important in the aspect of capturing the patientââ¬â¢s history and also the treatment they received. Narratives use standard abbreviations, are not written in first person, instead they refer to themselves as ââ¬Å"the nurseâ⬠, and finally, rely on the communication with others. Professional journals for publication are optional for nurses but are quite popular. Journals are a compiled of the nurseââ¬â¢s experience, clinical practices, and their theoretical approaches and/or opinions. Nurses write journals to inform their audience, primarily formed of nursing students. Nurseââ¬â¢s journals give other people a first-hand look at their point of view and their job. If a nurse rises to the head of a department, he/she will face more writing than that of a registered nurse. Staff proposals and budget proposals are simply directed within the department. A staff proposal consists of the duties of the staff and the expectations they are held to. Budget proposals consist of the budget throughout the department and how it will be distributed. Department operations are the operations the department can fulfill. These include the day-to-day functioning of the department. Policies and procedures review the policies by which the employees must follow and the procedures they take before handling care for a patient. Finally, protocols refer to the steps of the procedures and experiments that are conducted by the department. Reflection: Montana State University prepares students to be successful in their chosen field. MSU offers Writing 101 and also University Seminar that covers the writing aspect. I think the preparation of MSU for nursing students and writing is sufficient due to the fact that the majority of the junior year in the pre-nursing major simply consists of all nursing classes. These classes will also review all aspects of nursing, including the writing that a registered nurse will complete within the profession. Conclusion: Overall, I was unaware of all the writing that was needed in the profession of a registered nurse. I did not think that I would do more than simply taking nurseââ¬â¢s notes. With these findings, I am very grateful for the writing courses offered at Montana State University.
Daimler Chrysler Customer Service Review
Daimler Chrysler Customer Service Review How Effective Customer Servicesà Are Provided at DaimlerChrysler Customer Service We have all heard, demanded, used and complained about customer service at some point in our lives as consumers. And depending upon what the issue was, the term ââ¬Ëcustomer serviceââ¬â¢ differed based upon whatever it was we received, did not received, or thought we should have received. The preceding is exactly the point. Customer service seemingly differs depending upon the industry as well as the segment within the particular company that the public deals with. And while the corporations we deal with are huge organizations, our conception of customer service comes down to those individuals within the company with whom we come in contact, as well as those we do not. Blacharski (2006, p. 17) in his book ââ¬Å"Superior Customer Service: How to Keep Customers Racing Back to Your Business ââ¬â Time Tested Examples from Leading Companies ââ¬Å" tells us that ââ¬Å"Customer service is not just the responsibility of the service center or call center â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ , it represents ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ a comprehensive, integrated strategy that involves every single area of the companyâ⬠. In todayââ¬â¢s highly competitive environment, customers have the information as well as option to pick and choose from any number of competing products which aside from elements of style, manufacturing processes and some features, are basically highly similar. Lilienââ¬â¢s (1974, pp. 279-285) examination of why consumers buy as contained in his work ââ¬Å"An Application of a Modified Linear Learning Model of Buyer Behaviorâ⬠found that consumer learn on a continual basis of the quality as well as characteristics of the brands they purchased, as well as those of friends and associates. And therein lies the point, a brand represents a certain image it conveys, and we expect that image to deliver in real terms when and after we purchase. Mention a brand, is if the company has successfully cultivated its image, that brand will conjure up certain thoughts and a stance regarding the company in our minds. Mention Microsoft, Coca-Cola, IBM, BMW or DaimlerChrysler and you probably form some sort of opinion or image just from hearing the names, either from personal experience, those of associates, friends or the companyââ¬â¢s advertising and or market reputation . The preceding companies are recognized as the top most respected companies according to surveys and studies by the Financial Times PriceWaterhouse Coopers in 2005 (FinFacts Ireland, 2005). The foregoing is integral to what is termed branding, as well as customer service, as these images or expectations are what we are lead to believe we are buying, in addition to the actual product, the company behind it! The foregoing leads us to an examination of how effective customer service is provided, utilizing DaimlerChrysler as the example, compared against the next best or best company in this area in the automotive industry. We will look at what makes these companies revered, and why, and how they stack up against the industry as well as each other. In order to equate customer service as it applies to the automotive industry, we will need a standard of measurement as well as some baseline areas from which to make an assessment. To do so, we will utilize the ranking and rating system employed by JD Power and Associates (2006a) who are recognized as the foremost independent authority in this area. According to the JD Power and Associates ââ¬Ë2006 Customer Service Index (CSI) Studyââ¬â¢ in the United States conducted among ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ 79,580 owners and lessees of 2003 to 2005 model year â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (JD Power and Associates, 2006b) automobiles. Lexus, a Toyota Motor Corporation (Wikipedia, 2006) ranked as the number one company in customer service with a ââ¬ËCustomer Service Index Rankingââ¬â¢ of 912 out of a possible 1,000, with Mercedes ranked at number 22 with a ranking of 872 (JD Power and Associates, 2006b). Surprised? This means that there are 21 companies rated ahead of Mercedes in terms of customer service satisfaction, yet mention Mercedes and it still conjures up images of superior craftsmanship and quality. So, what exactly were the determining factors in arriving at the preceding rankings and what were the reasons? According to JD Power and Associates, customer satisfaction is the overall experience one has with the dealership, and particularly the service department, whereby they interface with the personnel regarding routine as well as other vehicle service needs during ownership (JD Power and Associates, 2006b). The importance of the preceding is that those customers who are satisfied with service as well as their experience with the dealership, which represents their point of contact with the automobile company, will be likely to not only return for service, they will likely purchase their next vehicle from the company as well. And the preceding 22nd ranking has not been lost on the executives at Mercedes. The company has announced they are focusing upon a new image that ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ emphasizes service â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Crain Communications, Inc., 2006), with the label for this new direction termed as ââ¬Å"Appreciationâ⬠. The foundational pillars of Mercedes strategy are centered upon service, value, comfort and safety in a push to win back buyers who have been put off by a decline in quality, the centerpieces of success which Lexus has focused on. The companyââ¬â¢s group vice president, Bob Carter, stated that the goal of Lexus ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ is to deliver 100% customer satisfactionâ⬠(PR News Today, 2006). To understand the success of Lexus, and the repositioning of Mercedes, one needs to understand that customer service means (Carlaw and Deming, 1998, p. 4): ââ¬Å" Doing ordinary things extraordinarily well. Going beyond whatââ¬â¢s expected. Adding value and integrity to every interaction. Being at your best with every customer. Discovering new ways to delight those you serve. Surprising yourself with how much you can do. Taking care of the customer like you would take care of your grandmother.â⬠Introduced as an automotive brand seventeen years ago (1989), Lexus has captured the number one spot in this category eleven times (PR News Today, 2006). Effective customer service is not what the company thinks it is, it is what the customer thinks it is, and this is the important distinction in understanding effective customer service. The measurements entailing the rating of customer service include (USA Today, 2004): obtaining a service appointment at a convenient time, having the maintenance and or repair work performed correctly the first time the quality of work performed user friendliness pertaining to the service the overall customer service experience fairness of charges for service and repairs speed in completing the service appointment A big aspect of customer service rankings lies in the initial vehicle quality, meaning the improved quality of new vehicles thus necessitating the need for repair visits (USA Today, 2004). The preceding aspects represents one of the most important facets in garnering high levels of customer service satisfaction in that the lower the need for the customer to contact the company regarding things that need fixing, the higher their satisfaction will thus be. The foregoing has been consistently mentioned in customer service rating comments regarding the surveys conducted by JD Power and Associates which stated that brands have moved up in their customer service rating through ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ improving the quality of new vehicles â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ with this aspect thus resulting in ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ fewer repair visitsâ⬠(USA Today, 2004). With this in mind, along with the other customer service points, lets look at the reasons behind Lexus high rated performance versus Mercedes 2006 Vehicle Brand Ratings 5 Star Rating Points (With 5 representing the highest) (JD Power and Associates, 2006c) The preceding, as pointed out by JD Power and Associates provides a strong correlation between the high customer service ratings achieved by Lexus, and the lag Mercedes has felt in this quarter, and the resulting lower customer service satisfaction scores. Conclusion As stating in the beginning of this presentation, consumer perceptions regarding the aspects of customer service varying according to what they individually find and deem as important to them. A long wait on the telephone, a missed service appointment call back, an out of stock part, an automotive rattle, a mechanical breakdown, warranty areas for areas that might be borderline in terms of coverage are all facets that figure into the broad world of customer service. Thus, an automotive manufacturerââ¬â¢s best defense against all of these variables is the building of a quality product that results in fewer potential problem areas for their customers. This has been the approach of Lexus, Lincoln BMW and other brands, and now this mantra has been taken up by Mercedes as well. And while the best customer service is a result of not needing to contact the company at all, as a result of a worry and defect free product, the fact is that taking care of customer needs in every contact represents the opportunity to build upon their purchase experience and gain their loyalty. Mercedes has this lesson to build upon. Bibliography Blacharski. D. Personal Gods, Deism, & ther Limits of Skepticism :: essays research papers fc
In order to continue our discussion of the legitimate philosophical, scientific, and religious aspects of the science and religion quagmire we need a frame of reference to guide us. What I present here is an elaboration on a classification scheme proposed by Michael Shermer. (5) Shermer suggests that there are three worldviews, or "models," that people can adopt when thinking about science and religion. According to the same worlds model there is only one reality and science and religion are two different ways of looking at it. Eventually both will converge on the same final answers, within the limited capabilities of human beings to actually pursue such fundamental questions. The conflicting worlds model asserts that there is only one reality (as the same world scenario also acknowledges) but that science and religion collide head on when it comes to the shape that reality takes. Either one or the other is correct, but not both (or possibly neither, as Immanuel Kant might have argued). In the separate worlds model science and religion are not only different kinds of human activities, but they pursue entirely separate goals. Asking about the similarities and differences between science and religion is the philosophical equivalent of comparing apples and oranges. "These are two such different things," Shermer told Sharon Begley in Newsweek's cover story "Science Finds God," "it would be like using baseball stats to prove a point in football." Using Shermer's model as a starting point for thinking about S&R, I realized that something is missing. One cannot reasonably talk about the conflict between science and religion unless one also specifies what is meant by religion or God (usually there is less controversy on what is meant by science, though some philosophers and social scientists would surely disagree). So what makes Shermer's picture incomplete is the very important fact that different people have different Gods. I am not referring to the relatively minor variations of the idea of God among the major monotheistic religions, but to the fact that God can be one of many radically different things, and that unless we specify which God we are talking about, we will not make any further progress. My tentative solution to the problem is therefore presented in FIGURE 1. Here the panoply of positions concerning the S&R debate is arranged along two axes: on the abscissa we have the level of contrast between science and religion, which goes from none (same worlds model) to moderate (separate worlds) to high (conflicting worlds).

The Media and Eating Disorders Essay -- Argumentative Persuasive Topic
The Media and Eating Disorders It is funny how so many girls and women today are led to believe that the only way to feel attractive and be beautiful is to have their bodies consist of nothing but skin and bones. Women are dieting more today then they have ever been before. They are striving for an unattainable body figure that is portrayed by the media as being the ideal standard for today's women. It gets worse. Not only are women dieting unlike ever before, but they will ruthlessly harm their bodies in order to achieve these inaccessible standards. This ruthless harm that haunts so many women today just so happens to be what we call eating disorders. Anorexia and bulimia are the primary diseases that go in the category of eating disorders. Who is to blame for this daunting occurrence? In most cases, the media is either some or all to blame for the eating disorder and standards placed for women. Commercials, billboards, women's magazine ads, etc. are all forms of the media that portray negative images of women. When the women in today's society sees what is being advertised (which happens hundreds, if not thousands of times a day) it is not so shocking that many of them strive for these impossible body images. It is when the want and desire becomes so strong that these women drive themselves to starvation and other forms of eating disorders. In order to realize the effect that advertising is having on girls and women in society today, it is important for people to know the facts and statistics that are current about eating disorders. Eight million girls and women are affected with eating disorders (Wilson and Blackhurst 111). Among college-aged women, bulimia affects nearly one in every five (Wilson and Blackhurst 1... ...than the media. It is important, though, to recognize the kind of effect media and advertising has on women. It is important to realize that because of what is portrayed in Western society, many women will go to great lengths (sometimes deadly lengths) just to meet these portrayals. If society wants to change what women are doing to themselves every day, than it is up to the media to start showing women today that it is okay to be who you are, big or small. Ability Grouping and Tracking in Schools Famous American author Mark Twain once said, ââ¬Å"I have never let schooling interfere with my educationâ⬠(The Quotations Page). School is sometimes a difficult place to learn. Teachers canââ¬â¢t be expected to give an individualized lesson to thirty students at once. This task increases in difficulty when not all of the students are behaving or when the students are at different levels of learning. Some schools, however, are attempting to make learning easier on both students and teachers. The methods of tracking and ability grouping are revolutionizing the way teachers teach and students learn. Tracking and ability grouping are two separate practices, but they share many similarities. Ability grouping is used most commonly in elementary schools, while tracking is used in high schools. Both practices involve grouping students by their abilities in schools. The main difference between the practices is tracking is between classes, while ability grouping is within individual classes. Tracking, in other words, is different for every subject. Ability grouping is grouping within an individual class (Loveless). The main arguments against tracking and ability grouping deal with the lower-level students. Critics argue that ability grouping can create a "self-fulfilling prophecy" for lower class and minority students, who tend to be placed in the lower-achieving classes or groups (Thompson). Also, some argue that the lower-level classes may not receive the same quality of instruction as higher-level classes, increasing the achievement gap (Sosnowski). To help shrink the achievement gap, teachers will often reshuffle groups when using the ability grouping method. Sometimes, teachers will give t... ...my entire high school career. Ability grouping and tracking are practices that could greatly benefit every school system and every individual student. Lower-level students would no longer feel pressured to learn at an uncomfortable pace. They would have the opportunity to receive additional instruction on concepts that they struggle with. Higher-level students would have opportunities to learn at an accelerated rate, and they would have a chance to explore concepts in much greater depth. These students wouldn't feel like they are constantly waiting for the other students to catch up with them. American journalist Sydney J. Harris said, "The whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows" (Sydney J. Harris Quote). Tracking and ability grouping can help transform our generation of mirrors into windows that can change the world with our knowledge.

Models and Theories Essay
New technological advances have changed the way organizations are preparing for the future. Management must focus on the human implications resulting from the implementation of new technology and be prepared for resistance and human implications resulting from technological changes. The way management prepares for the change can create a smooth transition or failure. Many theories and models for change have been created to help this transition. Choosing the right model or theory for your work place depends on the type of organization. Although you do not know how the workforce will react to the change, it is important to implement a strategy that will help foster the change. Many factors needed to be weighed to implement a successful change strategy. Management needs to look at the organizational culture, the challenges of implementing the change and the tactics they will use to overcome resistance of the change. There are many different models and theories involving change management. The first model is appreciative inquiry. ââ¬Å"Appreciative inquiry is a form of action research that attempts to create new theories, ideas and images that aid in the developmental change of a system (Bushe, Gervase, 2001). â⬠Appreciative inquiry is a collection of peopleââ¬â¢s positive experiences and tries to find ways to emulate them. A disadvantage to appreciative inquiry is that there is no set way of collecting data. ââ¬Å". The basic process of appreciative inquiry is to begin with a grounded observation of the ââ¬Å"best of what isâ⬠, then through vision and logic collaboratively articulate ââ¬Å"what might beâ⬠, ensuring the consent of those in the system to ââ¬Å"what should beâ⬠and collectively experimenting with ââ¬Å"what can be (Cooperrider & Srivastya, 1990)â⬠. An advantage to appreciative inquiry is that organizations can build from previous positive experiences. This method also promotes group cohesiveness and bonding over shared experiences. The open-systems theory is a model that seeks to omprehend the interdependencies between the organization and its environment. ââ¬Å"To conceptualize an organization as an open system is to emphasize the importance of its environment, upon which the maintenance, survival, and growth of an open system depend. A systems approach to organizations begins with the postulate that they are open systems which, of necessity, engage in various modes of exchange with their environment (Katz and Kahn, 1966)â⬠. The open-systems method developed by Bertalanffy in 1956, uses action plans and problem solving techniques. Considering the task elements involved for groups, collective efficiency perceptions of groups may influence their effectiveness (Gibson, 1999). Leaders in an organizational change will face many different kinds of resistance. These changes arise from perceived threats and changing of their normal work routine. According to Lewins force field analysis, ââ¬Å" an issue is held in balance by the interaction of two opposing sets of forces, those seeking the change and those attempting to maintain the status quo; the resisting forcesâ⬠(Lewin, Kurt). The change model by Beckhard, states, ââ¬Å"employee involvement is essential in understanding the connection between employee empowerment and organizational successâ⬠. The three components of overcoming resistance in this method are dissatisfaction with the current situation, vision of the future, and achievable steps to reaching this vision. The catastrophe theory looks at change in a mathematical formula. The catastrophe theory states that once an organization is out of its stable or preferred state there is no continuous way back.

Is Climate Change Man Made Environmental Sciences Essay
Bushnell ( 2010 ) states that Carbon dioxide degrees are now greater than at any clip in the past 650,000 old ages and mean planetary temperature is keeping its lifting tendency. Similarly, Human activities has released plenty C to raise the temperature of the Earth about 1 grade over the last century ( Alterman, 2006 ) . Our planet is sing a clime alteration headed by temperature additions. Climate alteration is going a serious job all over the universe. It is genuinely a planetary issue that impacts on all persons irrespective of nationality, gender or wealth. In recent old ages, human often take the effects for clime alteration with blood and cryings. DeWeerdt ( 2007 ) believes that the duty for 150,000 extra deceases annually due to utmost conditionss was climate alteration. Climate alteration, as a worldwide job, bit by bit poses a menace to life of human Begins. Glacial extirpation, sea degree rise, reduced harvests, extreme conditions, species extinctionaÃâ à ¦ It is human being that should be blamed non the nature because clime alteration is semisynthetic. This essay is to explicate that planetary clime is warming and this alteration is caused by human activities which are emanations from fossil fuel burning, inordinate land usage and population growing. Any alteration in the conditions forms of an country which is long-run and important particularly warming is climate alteration ( Dictionary.com, 2011 ) . The most of import ground of clime alteration is firing of fossil fuel. As all known that burning of coal and gasolene can bring forth C dioxide and other nursery gas. Excessive measure of nursery gas will barricade the heat exchange between the Earth and ambiance, which bit by bit consequences in planetary heating. Although people realized this a long clip ago, the demand of coal has ne'er decreased. ââ¬Å" Today, coal-burning power mills generate the bulk of electricity in the United States ( 48 per centum ) , followed by natural gas ( 22 per centum ) , atomic ( 19 per centum ) and renewables ( 9 per centum ) â⬠( Kliesch, 2011 ) . For illustration, China, the biggest manufacturer of coal in the universe which generates more than 70 % of its electricity with coal has turned to foreigner providers because domestic supply can non fulfill immense demand ( Anonymous, 2011 ) . Besides, gasolene for autos is another subscriber to planetary heating. As electricity autos will go on m eet challenges, the huge bulk autos daily used by people consume gasolene. One typical auto emits 11,740 lbs of C dioxide per twelvemonth, nevertheless the bad intelligence is carbon dioxide can non be minimized through the emission-control system in autos ( Kliesch, 2011 ) . In decision, human productive activities rely on dodo fuel, limitless burning regardless of its consequence on planetary clime eventually result in a heating clime. Littorals ( 2009 ) suggests that manage of land usage is besides required to restrict emanation of C dioxide every bit good as burning of fossil fuel. Excessive land usage is the other ground of clime alteration. It is by and large known that oceans and workss take CO2 from atmosphere. As explained by Hoogeveen ( 2007 ) , oceans absorb CO2 since it is soluble in H2O ; workss and trees remove CO2 due to photosynthesis and carry it in signifier of energy- a procedure named as ââ¬Å" C segregation â⬠. To be more precise, 60 % of CO2 emitted by human activities is absorbed by oceans and workss. However world is interrupting the C rhythm, the delicate balanced system what C exchanged through land, H2O and air ( Alterman, 2006 ) . Emission of C dioxide is increasing while land area of woods is cut downing. There is increasing grounds that woods are under force per unit area ( Hoogeveen, 2007 ) . Thousands of square kilometers of woods disappears and so go paper merely to fulfill lim itless human wants. Rivers can non last as more land for skyscraper is needed. Hoogeveen ( 2007 ) states that as a consequence of deforestation and fire, devastation of woods adds one million millions of metric tons of C into atmosphere every twelvemonth. Thus, inordinate land usage has impacts on planetary clime alteration. Population growing is the 3rd ground of clime alteration. Rapid population growing leads to higher ingestion of natural resources and pollutant emanation. With increasing consciousness on planetary heating and its chief perpetrator, C dioxide emanations, population growing is deriving attending of climatologists. Petroleum, one of the beginnings used for generates electricity, gives off a batch of pollution. Watching Television, utilizing air-condition, play picture gamesaÃâ à ¦when people do these things more nursery gas is sent to the air. Froome ( 2010 ) believes that as seeking to run into both domestic and international emanation decrease, the electricity sector is the most critical beginning of nursery gas emanation in Australia. Since population additions quickly, more electricity is demanded. That is to state, there is more C dioxide emitted into the air to fulfill increasing electricity demand due to population growing. Besides, more refuse is sent to landfills because of increasing population. The procedure of firing refuse sends an tremendous sum of nursery gas and makes planetary warming worse. Wolpin ( 2006 ) states that the entire sum of waste generated have been lifting greatly as a consequence of increasing population. In drumhead, population growing should be considered as a of import cause. However, there are still some natural component may ensue in clime alteration such as home base tectonics, solar end product, orbital fluctuations, volcanism and ocean variableness. But this can non be alibis of world. It is human being should be responsible for planetary clime alteration. Global clime alteration which has caused a batch of catastrophes on the Earth is semisynthetic. Emissions from fossil fuel burning, inordinate land usage and population growing are the major factors can ensue in clime alteration. Finally the universe gathered in Copenhagen to discourse how much C dioxide people should be seting into the ambiance. Time is running out, human should move from right now. developing environmental direction engineerings, utilizing clean energy and puting up comparative Torahs are all executable ways to stabilise clime alteration.

They are thinking that their parents will support their financial daily lives, thus they do not feel worried about continuing their education. Hedonism
HEDONISM There is no doubt that pleasure is good. Whether the pleasure is emotional or physical; whether we get this pleasure through taste, touch, sight, scent, or hearing ;it makes no difference. Pleasure is always enjoyable. In fact the words pleasure and good are often times interchangeable. After seeing a movie I liked, I may tell someone that the film was pleasurable or that it was good. Both descriptions have a positive connotation. But while pleasure is undoubtedly good, it is not the highest good and certainly not the only good, as the Hedonist would say.First, we must look at examples throughout the world which will prove that pleasure is not the highest good. One example would be a sadistic child molester who gets pleasure out of raping young children. According to the Hedonist this sickening act would be good because the molester is getting pleasure out of it. Of course they would argue that this is not the pleasure they speak of because it will turn out to be bad for the molester in the long run. He will be sent to jail and be ostracized from society, causing him much more pain than pleasure. Therefore this would not be an example of Hedonistic pleasure. But the Hedonist is making a very dangerous assumption: the molester will always get caught and always be punished. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Many people get away with their crimes everyday without feeling the wrath of justice. So if a molester gets pleasure out of little children, is it good? If a Hedonist were to answer yes, then it does not seem like a sound philosophical viewpoint. For another example, we can turn to the Holocaust.Over six million Jews and countless others were killed at the hands of the Nazis. While many of the Nazis were disgusted by the killings (Oscar Schindler was one) an even greater amount got pleasure out of it. They thought that they were doing the world a good by ridding it of the inferior human elements. It was this idea that led to millions of bruta l deaths. Yet very few Nazis were ever prosecuted. Many fled to other countries and continued their lives without ever taking responsibility for the heinous crimes they committed. In fact, many still felt inwardly proud of the duty they had done for the Aryan race. So according to the Hedonist the Nazis were doing nothing wrong as long as they were getting pleasure. Once again this is a hard concept to accept as true. A Hedonist will say to look closely at our society and lives and we will see that we live according to pleasure. Everyone wants to be happy and happiness is directly correlated with pleasure. But, in fact, our society is not run on the basis that pleasure is the highest good.If it were, our whole justice system would fail. In court, a murderers defense would be I got pleasure out of the killings. As a Hedonist, the judge would then have to set the criminal free. Our constitution is founded on the idea that every person has the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, but not pleasure. Our founding fathers knew that if our society was based solely on pleasure then people would be doing whatever they wanted to do whenever they wanted to do it. A Hedonistic society would be chaotic and anarchic; it simply would not work. Hedonism HEDONISM There is no doubt that pleasure is good. Jan & Ken: Managing Conflict in Relationships Essay
Q #1: Using the chapters on language and emotions to help frame your answer, suggest two ways that Ken could open this conversation more productively, beyond clearly expressing his emotions and using ââ¬Å"Iâ⬠language. Ken could have used language that promotes cooperation and mutual respect. â⬠Jan, weââ¬â¢ve been friends for a long time and Iââ¬â¢d like to discuss a situation before it interferes with our relationship.â⬠or ââ¬Å" Jan, thereââ¬â¢s a problem in our friendship that we need to address.â⬠By aiming for the win-win approach he can begin the conversation in a better frame of mind (Wood, 2013, P242). Also, by striving to take each person into consideration, Jan would have seen both parties equally and not felt she had to defend herself so abruptly. Therefore, honoring both partners and the relationship would have benefitted the opening statement (Wood, 2013, P.242). Q #2: How do you perceive Janââ¬â¢s effort to convince Ken to forgive her? Based on what you have learned in this chapter, suggest two ways she might more effectively seek Kenââ¬â¢s forgiveness.à I see Jan being able to convince Ken that her intentions are sincere by first being committed to everyoneââ¬â¢s satisfaction and applying the win-win approach (Wood, 2013, P. 230). ââ¬Å" Iââ¬â¢m sorry Ken, what can I do to fix this?â⬠Secondly, by using a softer tone and better voice response (Wood, 2013, P.232). Had she combined the two at the time she replied to Ken, she would have been more effective. ââ¬Å" Oh Ken, I did not realize what I was doing would end up hurting you, I never meant to hurt you! Can you ever forgive me?â⬠Q #3: What are two nonverbal cues used by Jan. What are two nonverbal cues used by Ken? In what ways did the nonverbal cues used by both Ken and Jan impact the message? What are the verbal messages used by each? What, contradictions occurred between the nonverbal cues and the verbal message and how did the contradictions impact the interaction? Both Ken and Jan used body language and increase/decrease of volume as nonverbal cues (Wood, 2013, P. 121). Jan bobbed her head, pointed her fingers toward him and when she was frustrated and defensive she raised her voice. Ken emphasized each point by the sudden stop of hand gestures and in at least two separate instances, lowered his voice with frustration. These gestures are considered Kinesics (Wood, 2013, P. 126). By using these specific cues both Ken and Jan were setting the tone of the conflict and causing it to reflect badly (Wood, 2013, P. 232). Ken used a psychological exit response (Wood, 2013, P. 231) as a verbal message when he stated, ââ¬Å" Maybe neither one of us can trust the other, maybe we shouldnââ¬â¢t tell each other anythingâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ And he implied she couldnââ¬â¢t be trusted further. Janââ¬â¢s most obvious verbal message implied her friendship with Shannon was as important as her relationship with Ken by giving a passive, loyalty response that in volved both friends (Woods, 2013, P. 232). These verbal messages Ken and Jan used contradicted the original intention, which was how they both cared about the other within the relationship. It caused both of them to pull away from each other in a defensive frame of mind that not only defeated the purpose but also had a devastating effect on the relationship. Q #4: Reviewing the nonverbal and verbal cues identified in the last question, what are the roles that these play in the conflict? Do these cues lead to a more positive outcome or negative? How can nonverbal and verbal cues be used to lead to a more productive conflict resolution? Perception and interpretation (Wood, 2013, P. 76) played the most important role during this conflict because it engaged both parties to successfully use non-effective communication. The cues played the role of kitchen-sinking, unproductive conflict communication, frequentà interruptions, cross complaining, disconfirmation of each other (Wood, 2013, P. 204-206), and nonverbal metacommunication (Wood, 2013, P. 27, 233). Ken used them in his unsuccessful attempt to emphasize the seriousness of the situation, whereas Jan utilized them with her defensive listening (Wood, 2013, P. 155). This created a negative outcome. Cues are a symbolic perception of how we are interpreted whether it be verbal or non verbal. Therefore, our intention must first be focused on creating a good outcome and consider effective communication by engaging in dual perspective and monitor the communication (Wood, 2013, P. 31-33) to become productive and resolve any conflict. Secondly, relax! Donââ¬â¢t be so tense and intense about the situation, it comes across as the chilling effect (Wood, 2013, P. 178) and causes an unwanted reaction. Show that you are emotionally involved within the conflict by effectively expressing your emotions (Wood, 2013, P. 180-181) and respond sensitively when others communicate their emotions (Wood, 2013, P. 186-187). Show grace while engaged in the conflict (Wood, 2013, P. 243). Q #5: The conversation seems to be framed in a win-lose orientation to conflict. Each person wants to be right, and to win at the expense of the other. How can Jan and Ken move their conflict discussion into a win-win orientation? They should focus on a healthy conflict that involves all three parties: Ken, Jan and the relationship (Wood, 2013, P. 241). Honoring all three within the conflict confirms and regards the intention (Wood, 2013, P. 242). They should show grace in the nonverbal form (Wood, 2013, P. 243). This will allow both Ken and Jan to relax and become more open toward the conflict and achieve a good outcome. Q #6: Review the eight conflict-management skills discussed in the text. Identify three examples of these skills in the dialogue between Jan and Ken. Itââ¬â¢s my understanding that Jan tried to take responsibility for her thoughts, feelings and the issue at hand (Wood, 2013, P. 239) by the response, ââ¬Å" Iââ¬â¢m sorry. I didnââ¬â¢t mean to tell her, it just kind of slippedà outâ⬠(Cengage Learning, Jan and Ken). In using this statement she also looked for a way to preserve the othersââ¬â¢ face because she had accepted his point of the agreement (Wood, 2013, P. 240). Ken, while focused on the content level of meaning, intended to attend to the relationship level of meaning (Wood, 2013, P. 238) by these statements, ââ¬Å" Jan, we need to talk.â⬠and ââ¬Å" I thought I could trust you and tell you anything.â⬠(Cengage Learning, Jan and Ken). Q #7: Identify three places in the dialogue where Jan and Ken missed opportunities to manage conflict successfully. Give specific suggestions (supported by the text material) on how the conflict management strategies could have been incorporated to improve the in teraction. Ken began with, ââ¬Å" Jan, we need to talk. Why did you tell Shannon about what happened between Katie and me?â⬠(Cengage Learning, Jan and Ken). He could have approached her with, ââ¬Å" Jan, can we talk? I feel as if I have been betrayed by your actions and I donââ¬â¢t want it to ruin our friendship.â⬠This way he would be applying grace and sincerity toward the relationship (Wood, 2013, P. 243). By reacting to emotionally loaded language (Wood, 2013, P. 151) Jan callously stated, ââ¬Å" Ken, I told her that long before the two of you started dating.â⬠(Cengage Learning, Jan and Ken). She should have replied, ââ¬Å" I confided in Shannon because we have also been friends for a long time and I thought I could trust her as well. â⬠By admitting to him that she had trusted Shannon and confided in her it would show Ken that her decision reflected badly on her and that it really wasnââ¬â¢t intentionally to go against him. Jan retaliated with, ââ¬Å" Yeah? Like the time I told you I was thinking about dropping out of school for one semester and you just happened to tell my dad?â⬠(Cengage Learning, Jan and Ken). Had Jan applied active listening (Wood, 2013, P. 160-161), she would have realized that this conversation was about Ken and how he felt betrayed. She could have replied, ââ¬Å" I am truly sorry Ken, can you ever forgive me?â⬠References Cengage Learning. (Producer). (2011). Jan and Ken [Web Video]. Retrieved from http://alturl.com/522qq Wood, J. Diversity in Organizations Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 1
Diversity in Organizations - Essay Example In the case of I.T. business relationship established between India and US companies the factors that need to be assessed are more specific. The ability to understand the difference in workforce demographics by all levels of management, categorisation of diversity, establishing necessary legal framework relating to diversity issues like employment discrimination and creation of equal employment opportunity are the few important factors that need careful attention. The initiatives for diversity management must precede proper understanding of the above mentioned factors. A brief analysis of the important factors that need to be considered in the US-India business relationship are given below. Both India and United States belong to the group of countries that have highly diverse societies. The business relationship between two nations also have different type of diversity challenges and priorities. The highly skewed pattern of access to professional education, socialization and career progression in India creates tremendous pressure on locating, retraining and moulding the newly recruits to the expected level of competence desired. Thus non-uniform distribution of talent is the major bottleneck faced by overseas IT enterprises trying to establish business relationship in Indian mainland (Schome, n.d.). The task of managing the diversity in India would also be a new experience for American managers as they have been exposed to totally different requirements when compared to their previous experience back home. The American society is more adaptable to the changes required due to the huge entry of immigrants and or those underrepresented segment of the population. These man agers have had an earlier experience of creating an environment of social bond inspite of the prevailing diversity. Perception on diversity The major difference in the perception of the diversity across two nations clearly conveys the true picture on the diversity perception. The religion, gender, birth place, caste etc are the major diversity issues encountering an Indian. While in US they also include disability, age, marital status, immigration / citizenship status and sexual orientation (Schome, n.d). Legal Framework US have a very strong legal framework to ensure more robust policies with proper legal action being enforced against the corporate offenders. And these action are often highlighted as the cases of the best corporate practices. While in India, the things are more weak and the system lack proper legal support for any discriminatory practices. All the government and public sector undertaking bodies in India have a system of reservation, where a specified percentage of positions are earmarked for the people representing different caste/religion/section. Management Plan The diversity initiatives at workplace must facilitate easy exchange of new ideas and perceptions among all the members of the working group. Further, it would also help wider participation among all by inviting suggestions and solutions to important issues and thus ensure a respectful and acceptable work environment in the organization (Reichenburg,
